The Sony a7R VI is the ultimate pro-hybrid camera, combining a record-high resolution sensor with 30 fps speed, 8K video, and AI autofocus for everything from landscapes to sports.
Built specifically for sports and wildlife, the a7R VI introduces two crucial action modes: Pre-Capture, which buffers and saves up to a full second of 30 fps shots before the shutter is fully pressed, and Speed Boost, which lets photographers instantly jump to maximum frame rates (up to 30 fps) via a custom button.
The camera features an advanced sensor-shift Pixel Shift Multi Shooting mode that takes 4 or 16 rapid exposures, capturing an incredible 265.8MP of data for unmatched color precision and detail when merged in post. Additionally, it offers powerful in-camera multi-image stacking tools that composite between 4 and 32 RAW frames—allowing shooters to generate ultra-wide dynamic range HDR images or pristine, low-noise files.
The a7R VI introduces a refined auto-exposure algorithm that specifically detects facial skin areas, improving portrait exposure accuracy by 20% even in harsh backlighting, direct sunlight, or profile views. Additionally, advanced deep learning technology pairs with external visible light and infrared (IR) sensors to deliver highly precise color reproduction and ultra-accurate Auto White Balance processing.

- Real-time Eye AF is fully supported during video recording, for subject detection and tracking of human, animal, and bird eyes while shooting.
- Focus Map is a unique way of visualizing depth of field and functions in a similar way to peaking with a colorful overlay of the scene that indicates which parts of the scene are in front of and behind the focus point depending on the chosen aperture.
- A feature carried over from the FX6 digital cine camera, AF Assist lets you intuitively switch over to manual focus control for adjusting focus position when working with AF. This is a quick way to shift selective focus between various subjects in a scene while recording.
- A unique solution to compensate for how certain lenses perform when racking focus, Focus Breathing compensation will automatically smooth focus transitions and maintain a consistent field of view when changing the focus position during a shot. This mode crops into the image slightly and corrects for any detected shifts in composition when focusing is happening. This function is compatible with select E-mount lenses, check Breathing Compensation lens compatibility here.
The a7R VI cements its hybrid status with professional 10-bit video options, including full-frame 8K 30/24p (from 8.2K oversampling) and 4K 120p (from 5K oversampling). In Super 35 mode, it outputs detailed 4K 60p via 6.3K oversampling or 4K 120p via 4.6K oversampling. Additionally, a new AI-powered Framing Stabilizer mode automatically crops and tracks subjects to keep them centered.
The new Dual Gain video function drastically minimizes noise while preserving shadow details for ultra-smooth tonal gradations and wider perceived dynamic range. To achieve this, recording is limited to a maximum of 4K 30p, with ISO capped at 400 (or ISO 200–3,200 in S-Log3). Because this mode utilizes a slower sensor readout speed, it is highly optimized for static subjects like landscapes and interiors rather than fast-moving action.
The a7R VI significantly upgrades its audio capabilities, supporting professional 4-channel, 32-bit float / 96 kHz recording via the optional XLR-A4 adapter, complete with an in-camera WAV file backup. A new integrated noise reference microphone actively helps reduce background ambiance across all microphone sources. Additionally, the Multi Interface Shoe features a digital interface that natively supports 4-channel 24-bit audio without requiring extra cables.
