Description

The Sony a7R VI is the ultimate pro-hybrid camera, combining a record-high resolution sensor with 30 fps speed, 8K video, and AI autofocus for everything from landscapes to sports.

Exmor RS BSI Sensor and BIONZ XR2 Processor

The Sony a7R VI features a groundbreaking 66.8MP fully stacked Exmor RS BSI sensor—the highest resolution in an a7 body to date. Thanks to its stacked architecture, it achieves 5.6x faster readout speeds, driving an advanced AI-processing engine for significantly smarter and faster AF, AE, and white balance tracking.

The sensor’s BSI design delivers pristine image quality with low shadow noise and an expanded 16-stop dynamic range, making it perfect for HDR. Backed by high-speed copper wiring for rapid 14-bit data transmission, it captures massive 66.8MP stills with a versatile native ISO of 100–32,000 (expandable from 50 to 102,400).

Upgraded Processing and Continuous Shooting

The new BIONZ XR2 engine and integrated AI processing unit significantly boost overall performance and speed. This system drives fluent AI tasks, advanced subject recognition, and intelligent AF, while actively minimizing rolling shutter and motion distortion for exceptionally clean rendering of moving subjects.

Pre-Capture & Speed Boost

Built specifically for sports and wildlife, the a7R VI introduces two crucial action modes: Pre-Capture, which buffers and saves up to a full second of 30 fps shots before the shutter is fully pressed, and Speed Boost, which lets photographers instantly jump to maximum frame rates (up to 30 fps) via a custom button.

Improved 8.5-Stop IBIS
  • 8.5-Stop 5-Axis IBIS: Upgraded stabilization offers up to 8.5 stops of center compensation (7 stops at the periphery) using a high-performance gyro and smarter lens communication. Includes an enhanced video Active IS mode with a brand-new algorithm optimized for select OSS lenses to ensure rock-solid handheld footage.
Pixel Shift Multi Shooting

The camera features an advanced sensor-shift Pixel Shift Multi Shooting mode that takes 4 or 16 rapid exposures, capturing an incredible 265.8MP of data for unmatched color precision and detail when merged in post. Additionally, it offers powerful in-camera multi-image stacking tools that composite between 4 and 32 RAW frames—allowing shooters to generate ultra-wide dynamic range HDR images or pristine, low-noise files.

Accurate Exposure and Color
  • The a7R VI introduces a refined auto-exposure algorithm that specifically detects facial skin areas, improving portrait exposure accuracy by 20% even in harsh backlighting, direct sunlight, or profile views. Additionally, advanced deep learning technology pairs with external visible light and infrared (IR) sensors to deliver highly precise color reproduction and ultra-accurate Auto White Balance processing.

Advanced Focus and Real-time Recognition AF+
AI Processing Unit

Powered by a dedicated AI unit, the new Real-time Recognition AF+ delivers rock-solid tracking for distant or rapidly shifting subjects. Its advanced Human mode utilizes pose estimation to track bodies, heads, and eyes with high precision—maintaining a lock even in dense crowds or when the subject is partially hidden.

  • The specialized AI tracking expands to Animals, Birds, and Insects, pinpointing eyes, heads, or full bodies with extreme precision. It also instantly locks onto Cars, Trains, and Airplanes—targeting the front or nose of fast-moving vehicles. For sports and action, advanced Real-Time Tracking uses human pose estimation to stick to your chosen subject, completely ignoring foreground distractions or people crossing the frame.

Advanced Fast Hybrid AF
  • The Fast Hybrid AF system utilizes 759 phase-detection points covering 94% of the sensor, operating down to -6 EV in both stills and video. It easily handles 30 fps bursts by executing 60 AF/AE calculations per second between frames. Photographers can customize focus areas from XS to XL (with custom shapes), use Full-time DMF for instant manual ring overrides, or leverage the in-camera Focus Bracketing mode to capture up to 299 frames for deep-depth composites.

AF During Video Recording
  • Real-time Eye AF is fully supported during video recording, for subject detection and tracking of human, animal, and bird eyes while shooting.
  • Focus Map is a unique way of visualizing depth of field and functions in a similar way to peaking with a colorful overlay of the scene that indicates which parts of the scene are in front of and behind the focus point depending on the chosen aperture.
  • A feature carried over from the FX6 digital cine camera, AF Assist lets you intuitively switch over to manual focus control for adjusting focus position when working with AF. This is a quick way to shift selective focus between various subjects in a scene while recording.
  • A unique solution to compensate for how certain lenses perform when racking focus, Focus Breathing compensation will automatically smooth focus transitions and maintain a consistent field of view when changing the focus position during a shot. This mode crops into the image slightly and corrects for any detected shifts in composition when focusing is happening. This function is compatible with select E-mount lenses, check Breathing Compensation lens compatibility here.
Video Recording

The a7R VI cements its hybrid status with professional 10-bit video options, including full-frame 8K 30/24p (from 8.2K oversampling) and 4K 120p (from 5K oversampling). In Super 35 mode, it outputs detailed 4K 60p via 6.3K oversampling or 4K 120p via 4.6K oversampling. Additionally, a new AI-powered Framing Stabilizer mode automatically crops and tracks subjects to keep them centered.

  • The a7R VI offers elite color control through S-Cinetone, S-Log2/3, ProRes RAW output via HDMI, and custom user LUT support. Handheld video is stabilized via Dynamic Active Mode, while Breathing Compensation keeps framing consistent across focus pulls. Thanks to a new graphite heatsink design, the camera boasts exceptional thermal performance, recording 8K 30p or 4K 120p for up to 120 minutes at 77°F, and retaining up to 60 minutes of 4K (or 30 minutes of 8K) runtimes in harsh 105°F environments.

Dual Gain Function

The new Dual Gain video function drastically minimizes noise while preserving shadow details for ultra-smooth tonal gradations and wider perceived dynamic range. To achieve this, recording is limited to a maximum of 4K 30p, with ISO capped at 400 (or ISO 200–3,200 in S-Log3). Because this mode utilizes a slower sensor readout speed, it is highly optimized for static subjects like landscapes and interiors rather than fast-moving action.

Audio
  • The a7R VI significantly upgrades its audio capabilities, supporting professional 4-channel, 32-bit float / 96 kHz recording via the optional XLR-A4 adapter, complete with an in-camera WAV file backup. A new integrated noise reference microphone actively helps reduce background ambiance across all microphone sources. Additionally, the Multi Interface Shoe features a digital interface that natively supports 4-channel 24-bit audio without requiring extra cables.

Body Design and Connectivity
9.44m-Dot EVF and 4-Axis Multi-Angle LCD
  • The monitoring system sees a massive upgrade with a 9.44m-dot QXGA OLED EVF that offers 0.9x magnification, 120 fps motion, and 3x the brightness of the a7R V. Its premium 10-bit display covers the DCI-P3 color space, boasting a wide 41° field of view and a protective fluorine coating. On the back, a highly functional 3.2" 2.1m-dot touchscreen utilizes a versatile 4-axis multi-angle articulation system—blending the best of tilt and flip monitors—while matching the same color-accurate DCI-P3 wide gamut.
